2.5 Hours

English, Turkish

Come into a local home and discover two of Türkiye’s most beloved rituals; cooking dessert and sipping coffee, the slow, sweet way.

We’ll start by preparing künefe, the famous crispy cheese dessert made with shredded pastry, regional butter, and homemade syrup. You’ll learn how to layer it, cook it over a flame, and flip it golden, just like it’s done in traditional kitchens.
While the künefe cooks, we’ll move to the stove to brew Turkish coffee the old-fashioned way; slow, frothy, and filled with meaning. You’ll hear about its role in Turkish culture and maybe even try your hand at making a cup.

Finally, we’ll gather at the table to enjoy both, warm dessert, rich coffee, and easy conversation. It’s a sweet, sensory experience that invites you into real local life.

What makes it unique?

Turkish coffee fortune telling is a playful cultural tradition often shared among friends at home. In this experience, guests learn how coffee is prepared and how the fortune reading ritual works. The relaxed atmosphere and interactive conversations make it feel like a friendly gathering rather than a demonstration.

If you want to experience making some local deserts inside a family home, this is a must do. It is intended for a small number of people for this dessert class, but I was fortunate enough to be the only participant on 12 April. The host, Nuran, whose home it is in also teaches a dinner cooking class that I wish I would have known about as well (but unfortunately I head back home tomorrow). The dessert maker and teacher is Feyza (Nuran’s sister in law). The instruction and desserts we made were delicious. We also enjoyed some Turkish coffee while the desserts baked and enjoyed tea while we ate them. Feyza even did an “unofficial” reading of my coffee grinds. I hope what she saw comes true for me. We made two deserts. But most important, the warmth in their home and welcoming me like I was a family member will always be memorable. I feel like I learned a lot and will try the recipes when I get home. I also feel like I gained two Turkish Aunties spending the afternoon with them.

What a special opportunity to be invited into another’s home and share time together. Away from the hotels and tourist areas, a glimpse of how another culture lives. This is a hands on course. After a brief discussion we chose to make flour halva and semolina cookies. By hands on, the mixer was our fingers. Both turned out amazing. When they were finished we had Turkish tea or coffee and enjoyed more conversation. Take this class, it was a fantastic experience.
